A Piece of Denmark in Iowa

Elk Horn, Iowa has a gas station and a church. A tiny library that doubles as the city hall. A cafe, open for lunch, but no restaurants. No grocery store. No stoplights. And, I think only one stop sign.

It does, however, have a working windmill, imported from Denmark.

The mill sits on the edge of town, welcoming all who make the six mile drive over from Interstate 80. The visitor center sells flour which was ground between the large stones, making use of that western Iowa wind.

Western Iowa has a lot of wind, which is put to good use today generating renewable energy.
